Persons living in "extreme poverty" in Venezuela now outnumber persons living in "poverty"

A survey by Caracas' three largest universities - Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, Universidad Central de Venezuela, and Universidad Simón Bolívar called the "Encuesta de Condiciones de Vida 2015 (Encovi)," for the first time in the history of the country shows persons living in extreme poverty outnumbering persons living in poverty.

The increase in poverty, fear of crime, deficiencies in public services, and physical and environmental vulnerability of urban areas were "alarming," the universities said in a report.

In the absence of official figures from the government, the three universities conducted their own survey.

Persons from 1,500 households were interviewed between August and September 2015. To establish the poverty line, the researchers set Bs 14,556 as the minimum required for a basic food basket, amid 170% food inflation between in August 2015 year-on-year versus August 2014.
