New, modern Community Centre for Gulf View

The Honourable Nizam Baksh, Minister of Community Development, will formally open a new community centre at Recreation Avenue, Gulf View, La Romaine on Tuesday April 5, 2011 at 5:00pm. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to bring significant benefits to the people of Gulf View, which is located about half mile south of San Fernando.

The fully air conditioned, modern community centre consists of the following amenities:

• Auditorium on the first floor (equipped with elevators for the physically challenged)
• A Training Kitchen (for use in courses for culinary arts)
• Computer Room
• Classroom
• Gymnasium
• Dressing Rooms
• Wash Rooms

New Committee for Financial Assistance to be installed on April 4

New Committee to be installed for Financial Assistance Programme

A new committee will be officially installed to guide the operations of the Financial Assistance (Studies) Programme run by the Ministry of Community Development. Minister of Community Development the Honourable Nizam Baksh will deliver instruments of appointment to the six members during a short ceremony at 10:30 am on Monday April 4, 2011 at the Ministry’s Head Office on Jerningham Avenue, Belmont.

The Community Development Financial Assistance (Studies) Programme has been established to grant financial aid to nationals wishing to undertake programmes at the post-secondary and tertiary levels, to improve quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals.

This assistance takes the form of a monetary reward to or on behalf of an individual to assist with his or her education and/or training. The grant covers costs including books, equipment, travel and study aids.

Best Village “Train the Trainers” programme starts

The Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition’s “Train the Trainers” Programme is underway in north and south Trinidad, offering tutors additional training in the disciplines of Drama, Dance, Music and Drumming.

The programme, which has been held annually since the inception of Best Village in 1963, provides an opportunity for tutors to update their knowledge and skills in their respective areas of expertise. This in turn, will enable them to better impart the information to those they teach.

Classes started this past weekend at The Trinidad Theatre Workshop in Belmont, where trainers were trained in the area of Drama on Saturday March 26, 2011 from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. On Sunday March 27, 2011, classes were held in the areas of Dance and Music at the Creative Arts Centre in San Fernando from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, while classes on Drumming took place at the Mon Repos Community Centre, also from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Aripo Awards in Caroni now set for April 8

The Aripo Awards ceremony for the district of Caroni will now be held on April 8, 2011 at the Auditorium of the Flaming Word Ministries, Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas from 6:30 pm.

The awards were initially scheduled for tomorrow, April 29, 2011 at the Chaguanas Indoor Facility. But unforeseen problems prompted a change in the date and venue.

The Aripo Awards are part of the Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition’s Work Plan for 2011 to honour last year’s winners. It began on January 31, 2011, with the launch of the Environmental Sanitation competition (as part of the Prime Minister’s Beautification Competition) at the Sangre Grande Civic Centre and ceremonies have since been held in Nariva/Mayaro, St. Patrick East, St. George West, St. Patrick West and St. Andrew/St. David.

Minister Baksh launches Community Education Programme 2011

The Ministry of Community Development officially launched its Community Education (Skills Training) Programme (today) Wednesday March 23, 2011 at the Ministry’s Information, Training and Resource Centre at La Fantansie in St. Ann’s. The Honourable Nizam Baksh, Minister of Community Development delivered the feature address at this morning’s news conference, challenging Community Development supervisors and officers to identify government land where they could set up light industries, to stimulate employment in various districts (see the full address attached below). Courses begin at Community Centres and Complexes in districts across the country from Monday March 28, 2011.

The CEP provides training in a variety of marketable skills for home-based production of goods and services and employment generation. This would in turn, reduce household expenditure and allow for more effective use of scarce financial resources. The programme includes training at both basic and advanced levels. The Basic course is 60 hours in duration, while the Advanced course is 75 hours.

The target group includes: householders, unemployed, under-employed, vulnerable, less fortunate and those at risk. Participants must also be 18 years and over.
