Government to develop and improve infrastructure in Tobago for 2010-2011

The importance of infrastructure to the development of Tobago remains high. As part of Government’s Public Sector Investment Programme, the Tobago House of Assembly diligently pursued its quest to continue providing the necessary infrastructure to enable Tobago to continue on its path of growth and development.

In 2010, $54.5 million was utilized in the Roads and Bridges sector. Of this sum, $7 million was allocated for major improvement works on secondary roads. Several projects were completed, including:

• 381 metres of box drains at Canaan/Bon Accord Estate Road

• Box drains, curb and slippers on the sidewalk at Bowson Gully

• Construction of a retaining wall at Top Hill, Pembroke

• Completion of forty (40) metres of box drains and sidewalks at Signal Hill Branch Road

• Construction of a box drain and sidewalk and widening of the road on the Mt. Pleasant Drain Project

An allocation of $1.5 million for the Windward Road Special Development Programme facilitated the completion of the King’s Bay Hill projects.

Minister Baksh to distribute $6.5 million in relief to 650 families

The National Commission for Self-Help Limited, NCSHL will distribute 650 Minor Repair Reconstruction Grants (MRRG) to victims of natural disaster, fire and senior citizens at an estimated cost of $6.5 million.

The first of these events is carded for Friday December 17th 2010 at 1:30 pm at the Bisram Gopie Auditorium, Divali Nagar Site, Endeavour Road Extension, Off Uriah Butler Highway, Chaguanas. Community Development Minister, the Honourable Nizam Baksh will be present to deliver an address and hand out the grants.

At the first distribution, at total of 300 persons will receive purchase orders through the Minor Repair Reconstruction Grant Programme for the repair of their homes. In addition, the Commission will also be distributing food hampers to needy families at each event.

The second event (Tuesday December 21st at 11:30 am) is carded for the Siparia constituency office of the Prime Minister. At this event, the NCSHL will distribute 250 Purchase Orders to senior citizens and victims of natural disaster and fire. A total of 180 food hampers will also be distributed to needy families from the various constituencies.

The final event is tentatively carded for Wednesday December 29th, 2010 at 11am in Tobago. At this event, 60 MRRG purchase orders will be distributed in addition to 20 food hampers.

Los Alumnos de San Juan cops ninth parang title

General News

Los Alumnos de San Juan secured title number nine, winning the National Parang Competition at Parang Headquarters on O’Meara Road, Arima on Saturday December 11, 2010. The east-based band beat out nine other parang bands from across the country to take home the top prize of $100,000 in cash.

Placing a close second were Los Amigos Cantadores, followed in third place by Amantes de Parranda.

The other finalists were:

• Voces Jovenes
• La Familia de Rio Claro
• Renacer
• Los Pastores
• Voces de Promesa
• La Familia de Cermona y Amigos
• Paramininos
