Community Development Minister, the Honourable Nizam Baksh will formally open a new, vanguard community centre for the people of Waterloo and environs on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Located at the corner of Butler Village Street and Waterloo Main Road, the modern facility features an auditorium, a teaching kitchen, a classroom, computer rooms with internet access, male and female restrooms, a gym, an office and a built-in public address system. The building is also bespoke for the differently-abled and ready to serve as an emergency shelter in the event of a natural disaster.
"Community centres assist in keeping the youth from getting involved in criminal activities because of the programmes that are conducted there,” villagers have been quoted as saying. Through its Community Education Programme, the Ministry of Community Development annually offers over 200 courses in skills that empower thousands of citizens from across the country to become either employed or self-employed.
The Community Centres Construction and Refurbishment Programme has also been credited with providing jobs to villagers and small contractors from the area where centres are built or refurbished.
Since taking office, Minister Baksh has opened the Guayaguayare Community Centre, the Preysal Community Centre, the La Seiva Community Centre, and the Union Village Community Centre.
