Trinidad and Tobago celebrates Mothers' Day

Battimamzelle and other fine dining restaurants were full today as Trinidadians and Tobagonians took their mothers out to lunch and celebrated the women who gave birth to them.

"Someone once said, 'Motherhood is neither a duty nor a privilege, but simply the way that humanity can satisfy the desire for physical immortality and triumph over the fear of death,'" Education Minister Tim Gopeesingh said as he wished Mothers a happy day today.

"On this day I remember my own dearly departed mother, who raised me and her seven other children from poverty into success, weakness into strength, and who never failed to demonstrate to us goodness, love, compassion and dedication. I honour her memory today with love, respect and happiness to have been blessed by God with her, and I cherish all mothers on this day.

"May God give them all blessings of health, safety, strength and wisdom to continue their task of raising our children, nurturing them, loving them and caring for them. In you, mother, our destiny lies, in you, our future continues, in you, our hope resides, in you, humanity is preserved," he said.

Trinmar licence to be renewed

Petrotrin's license for Trinmar will be renewed and oil will be produced from the Jubilee discovery, Minister of Energy and Energy Affairs Senator Kevin Ramnarine announced today. He was speaking to business people at a breakfast event organised by the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Westmoorings.

His full speech was broadcast live on the Government's radio station 91.1 FM, with Ria Roopchandsingh reporting.

The announcement comes exactly one month after Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) President General Ancil Roget vowed that Trinmar’s Jubilee discovery will not be produced within the next year or in the near future if the Government did not renew the licence to Petrotrin.

"With regard to Trinmar, I wish to announce that the Ministry of Energy will be renewing Petrotrin's licence for Trinmar. It is our view at the Ministry that the company has demonstrated that it has a well-thought out strategy to increase oil production in Trinmar from where it is today at 21,000 barrels per day to 35,000 barrels per day, and in my opinion, looking at the numbers, there is even more potential for further upside with regard to Trinmar," Ramnarine said.
