T&T tops the world in LNG diversions

Trinidad and Tobago is one of the world's best at liquified natural gas (LNG) cargo diversions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) Global Gas Security Review 2016, released over the weekend (Dec. 9).

Trinidad & Tobago Q3 2016 LNG cargos - Argentina, South Africa get 1 each

The following are unconfirmed and based on marine traffic amid the dearth of liquified natural gas (LNG) contract transparency. LNG re-sellers routinely buy from Trinidad at below-market prices and re-sell to the world, including to Caribbean countries, at market prices. In his last budget speech (Sept. 30, 2016) Trinidad and Tobago Finance Minister Colm Imbert estimated the country loses approximately US$1.4 billion per year from the LNG diversions and is engaging the Inter-American Centre of Tax Administration (CIAT) to assist.
